Did you know that more than sixty-seven percent of US households have at least one pet? If you already have a pet in your family, the joy that they bring into your life may already be pretty obvious to you.
The way they snuggle up to you when you’re relaxing, or the way they are always so excited to see you no matter what, are feelings that simply can’t be replicated.
But aside from being wonderful companions and adding joy to our households, there are actually many studies that have shown that having pets can be good for your health.
Most of us find it hard to stay active even though we know that it’s amazing for our physical and mental health. There are so many things going on and so many things on our to do lists, adding physical activity to that list can be hard to commit to.
Having certain types of pets can encourage you to be more physically active. For example, having a dog will encourage you to go out on walks or runs so that your furry companion can get out of the house and get some exercise as well.
Those little puppy eyes are pretty good at persuading us to get outside and be active with them. One study by the National Institutes of Health said that those who walked dogs got more exercise than those who didn’t walk a dog.
Another study even found that older dog walkers aged 71 to 82 walked faster and longer than those who didn’t walk dogs. It also increased their mobility at home as well, not just while out walking their pooches.
But dogs aren’t the only pet that will encourage you to move more! If you have farm animals, you have to get outside and care for them which promotes daily physical activity.
At Legends Creek Farm we can attest to this! Raising goats keeps us active and outside much more than we likely would be without our goats.
If you are someone who feels stressed pretty often, coming home to a snuggly pet who wants nothing more than to spend time with you can feel wonderful.
If you’ve ever snuggled or played with a pet, you’ll know the feeling it can give you. Interacting with our pets releases oxytocin, a calming endorphin. One shocking Japanese study by Science found that dog owners experienced a 300% increase in oxytocin after spending just a half hour with their dogs.
Of course there are other types of pets that can decrease your stress, they just aren’t as well documented in studies as dogs are. There was also a study in New York that found that when conducting difficult tasks people were less stressed when a pet was with them than if a friend or a spouse was with them.
Going back to goats for a bit, since we are a goat farm and happen to think that they are some of the best pets out there, have you ever watched goats play? It’s impossible not to laugh at their antics as they prance and jump around. And laughter? That’s a stress buster too.
In the short term laughter can stimulate several of your organs, relieve your stress response, and soothe tension. Long term? Laughter can help to improve your immune system and reduce pain among other things.
So even if the studies aren’t there about a specific animal you have or are interested in adding to your family, you can bet they’re going to bring you happiness and relieve stress in that way.
One of the secrets to living longer, healthier lives may be having pets in your household. There are plenty of studies that show that having pets can improve your health by making you more active, reducing stress, and many other physical benefits on top of those. More specifically there have been studies that show that dog owners are less likely to die from a heart attack or stroke than non-dog owners.
Once you look at all the different separate benefits, it’s pretty obvious that pets will help you live a longer, happier life. While this isn’t a reason alone to get a pet, it’s definitely a plus if you’ve been considering a four legged companion already.
