Most of us do the same thing every year during the holidays. Sometimes we identify them as traditions, but sometimes they’re just habits we’ve picked up over the years.
But it’s always fun to start a brand new holiday tradition, especially after a hard year when you’re ready for some change in your life.
Below are some ideas for new family traditions you can start this year.
While a lot of people would love to support small businesses during the holidays, it’s not always easy when you’re used to the convenience of big-box stores. But while large retailers always get more than enough sales during the holidays, each dollar you spend makes much more of an impact on small businesses who are also competing for your sales.
So try starting a family tradition of committing to support small businesses during the holidays.
But how can you make this a tradition? There are plenty of ways if you get creative and that doesn’t mean buying all of your gifts and treats from small businesses if that doesn’t work for you. One way would be to decide that everyone in your household buys gifts for each other from small businesses.
When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone? It seems like the days of writing and mailing letters are long gone. With social media, cell phones, and texting, people don’t find it all that important to write letters because there are other more convenient ways to communicate.
But bringing back this older tradition has an almost romantic, magical quality to it. Writing a letter to those far from you updating them on what’s happening in your life and asking them how things are going for them would surely make them feel thought of and appreciated.
This is especially true for those relatives that many of us have who are not exactly tuned into technology and prefer the old school way of doing things.
Although building gingerbread houses seems like a pretty common tradition, it’s one of those activities that a lot of us say we’ll do and never end up getting to because you just never find the time.
Starting this tradition is a fun way to get the family together and do something with your hands for a couple of hours. There are a lot of different ways to build this tradition. If you want to have your household build one gingerbread house together you can do it that way, or if you have children (even adult children!) you might have each of them build their own.
There are premade gingerbread house kits available at almost any grocery or big box store making this activity easy. However, building from scratch either from homemade gingerbread cookies or even from graham crackers and frosting like a lot of us remember doing as kids make for much more unique and imaginative creations.
It may seem like an odd tradition to start, but it can be such a beneficial tradition for anyone who finds themselves constantly looking to technology.
The holidays are a time for slowing down, spending time with loved ones, and just enjoying the season.
However, most of us end up overwhelmed, stressed out, and feeling like we have a million things to do.
One way to help fix these feelings is to take a break from technology. This could mean just completely removing social media from your life for the time between Thanksgiving and New Years so you can focus on what’s important or even just taking a week off of any sort of technology from phones to tablets to TVs. It’s a great way to reset and reconnect.
Giving back can mean different things to different people. Sometimes this means monetary contributions to organizations that do work that you’re passionate about, sometimes this means going out and volunteering for those organizations.
Sometimes this can simply mean making an extra batch of cookies, or an extra plate of dinner, for your neighbor or coworker who doesn’t have someone to celebrate with. Make it a tradition to think of ways that you can make people feel cared for and make it your mission to find ways to make people smile during the holidays.
Starting new traditions can make the holidays feel extra fun, especially if you feel like you’ve been doing the same old thing for years and you’re ready for a change. Don’t forget to weigh in with your family to see if they have any ideas for traditions as well.
