What Is Calendula?
Calendula is a plant that is sometimes known as pot marigold and is native to Asia and southern Europe. It has beautiful yellow or orange flowers, and it's the petals of these flowers that are used for a variety of medicinal purposes. It is a gentle, soothing, and nourishing plant. Calendula oil can be extracted from the flower petals, the petals can be placed in a carrier oil to make an infused oil, or the straight petals can also be used. It has antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties that provide many benefits, especially to the skin.
Soothing and Nourishing
One common use of calendula is soothing irritated or dry skin. It has soothing and moisturizing properties to help keep skin smooth and hydrated. It’s also a very powerful plant to use when you have a wound on your skin. One of the ways it helps is through its high amount of flavonoids, plant-based antioxidants, which can reduce inflammation and support our skin's natural healing stages. It works well for a variety of things such as burns, bites, bruises, etc. Calendula also has anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce pain and swelling as well.

One lesser-known benefit of calendula is using it to reduce the appearance of scars. This scar reduction property of calendula can be carried over to breakout scars, pock scars, and other types of skin troubles or breaks in the skin that are known to leave a scar. It's sometimes used as a diaper cream, and calendula might also assist in slowing the development of wrinkles.
