Origin of Lanolin
Lanolin has been used for centuries by various cultures. Lanolin is secreted by the sebaceous glands of the Merino sheep, resulting in a yellow waxy substance that has many uses. Lanolin is produced by washing sheared wool in hot water and using a unique detergent to remove anything trapped in the wool such as dirt or sweat salts. It may also be extracted by using rollers to squeeze the sheep's wool to remove the oil.
Where We Source Our Lanolin
Our Lanolin is a byproduct of Merino sheep and is sourced from both Australia and India. Merino sheep are a domestic breed that is loving and playful. They are never muzzled and professionally sheared each spring. Shearing must be practiced for the health and hygiene of each individual animal. For the majority of modern sheep, it is cruel not to shear them. Domestic sheep do not naturally shed their winter coats. If a sheep goes too long without being shorn, a number of problems occur.
Benefits of Lanolin
Lanolin is an emollient and soothes and hydrates the skin wonderfully. It forms a protective barrier on the skin that keeps moisture in, and helps the body heal itself. Lanolin is known as an occlusive moisturizer, which means it reduced water loss from the skin. It is similar to petroleum, but not as heavy. Lanolin is an extremely popular treatment for sore nipples caused by breastfeeding because it works and doesn't need to be washed off before nursing.

One thing to keep in mind though, is that Lanolin is responsible for wool allergies, so people who are allergic to wool should avoid it.
